Father John V. Doyle School’s eighth grade students enjoyed a fun-filled, as well as educational, class trip to Washington, DC last weekend! Upon arrival, their first guided sightseeing tour included the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument, the FDR Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. Students and chaperons then had time to explore the Smithsonian Museums before eating dinner together. A guided nighttime tour then brought them to the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
While studying the Holocaust in class, students were prepared for the experience of visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum. They gained a deeper appreciation of this time in history as they wrote reflections for one of the trip’s many journal entries. The day continued into Arlington National Cemetery where they visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and experienced the Changing of the Guard. After dinner, they enjoyed rubbing elbows with the rich and famous - wax versions that is - at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum!
The weekend proved just as busy as students and chaperons toured the Newseum and the Capitol Building before photo stops at the Library of Congress and U.S. Supreme Court. Later, friends relaxed by sharing dinner followed by an evening of bowling!
Celebrating the Eucharist together at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was the perfect way to begin the last day of their trip. Everyone was impressed with the beauty and history of the Basilica. Their last stop was the National Zoo, where they encountered pandas, lions, reptiles, and primates!
Students in grades preK through 7 back at school prayed for their successful trip and were happy to welcome our students home when they returned on Monday morning! We thank Mr. Godin, Mrs. O’Keefe, and Mrs. Jarvis, as well as our parent chaperons and volunteers, for giving of their time to allow our students this wonderful experience!
As always,
Thank You for your support of Father John V. Doyle School! Mrs. Smith
